Darnell Mooney added another Holy S**t quote about Matt Nagy

Every time it seems like reports of the severity of Matt Nagy’s attack last year couldn’t get any worse, another quote tops it all off. Justin Fields took several turns mentioning how difficult it was. Cole Kmet couldn’t avoid the subject. Everyone who played it couldn’t help but admit in a roundabout way that Nagy never had a clear idea of what he was doing. Yet somehow, Darnell Mooney may have topped them all.

Friday’s practice at Halas Hall was one of the toughest yet. Several players admitted that it was exhausting. The coaches wanted to stress them mentally and physically. This work has been accomplished. One of the things the offense worked hard on was getting Fields out of the pocket on scrambles. When these situations occurred, receivers and tight ends also had to scramble, looking for free space to help the quarterback play. It might seem obvious to train with someone like Fields.

That’s until Mooney drops that bombshell.

It’s honestly hard to understand a line like that. Nagy had one of the most mobile quarterbacks in the NFL. Making plays out of pocket is one of its greatest strengths. You would think that a top priority in daily practice is to practice jamming exercises to take advantage of it. From what Mooney says, that never happened. The coaches basically suspended their quarterback to dry off if a play fell through.

The statistics make it even worse. Fields had a 138.5 passer rating on designed deployments last season and a 90.5 passing rating out of the pocket in his last five starts.

Darnell Mooney and the receivers must have felt helpless.

Nagy’s job was to help his quarterback any way he could. By all accounts, he didn’t do that. He ran the same offense no matter who was under center. It was his way or not. It’s no wonder with such a rigid structure that things constantly fall apart every week. All the defenses had to do was prevent a play from going as planned, and the Bears’ rigid offensive structure would take care of the rest.

Another is a growing list of reasons Darnell Mooney and everyone else in this building are better off with Nagy gone. Now everything is working to help Fields rather than hinder him. Practicing scrambling drills should only make his mobility and running accuracy even more dangerous.
