1 dead, 5 injured after light plane crashes on Miami Bridge, hitting SUV and catching fire – NBC 6 South Florida

One person was killed and five others injured when a light aircraft landed on a bridge in Miami on Saturday afternoon, hitting an SUV and bursting into flames.

The plane crashed on the Haulover Inlet Bridge near the 10800 block of Collins Avenue just before 1 p.m. The smoke from the plane wreckage could be seen for miles.

Federal Aviation Administration officials said three people were aboard the single-engine Cessna 172 when it lost engine power and crashed, hitting a vehicle with three people inside.

Miami-Dade Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said the plane was involved in a head-on collision with the SUV, causing the plane to overturn.

When firefighters arrived, they found the plane on fire and quickly extinguished the flames, officials said.

“We had three lifeguards from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue who got there first and started helping patients,” said fire department spokeswoman Erika Benitez. “Within a few minutes, several other units arrived and when they arrived they saw a plane bursting into flames next to a vehicle that had been hit by the plane.”

Zabaleta said two people were able to get out of the plane, but after the fire was put out, the victim’s body was found in the rubble.

Firefighters officials said five people were injured, including two who were on the plane and were taken to a local hospital with traumatic injuries. One of them was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and the other was grounded to Jackson North Medical Center.

A woman and two young children who were in the SUV were taken to hospital but suffered no serious injuries, Zabaleta said.

“It’s a miracle you’re in a vehicle, you know, the driver with the two young children, and you’re collided head-on with a plane and everyone’s okay, so we’re grateful for that, but it’s still unfortunate that we did lose someone in that scene,” said Zabaleta.

Officials have not released the identities of those involved.

Footage from the scene showed the plane wreckage in the middle of the roadway. The vehicle involved, a dark red or maroon SUV, was seen with severe frontal damage.

This SUV was damaged when a light aircraft crashed on a bridge in Miami on May 14, 2022.

The plane had departed from Fort Lauderdale International Airport and was en route to Key West International Airport, FAA officials said.

The Haulover Inlet Bridge at Collins Avenue has been closed between Sunny Isles Beach and Bal Harbor, according to authorities. Southbound Collins Avenue is closed at 158th Street.

Traffic was diverted and drivers were advised to seek an alternative route and expect severe delays.

Officials said the Department of Environmental Resources Management had been notified of the fuel spill from the plane.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident.
