Only three Macs available for immediate shipping from Apple

A check of Apple’s Macs, which can be delivered immediately, shows that these are now limited to just three models. For other Macs, the wait can range from one to two weeks to 11 weeks, depending on the model and country. Some of those who have already placed orders are seeing even longer wait times.

It’s the latest measure of Chinese supply chain woes, which Apple estimates could cost the company as much as $8 billion in lost revenue this quarter…

The global chip shortage was caused by a mix of factors. These include increased demand for technology during the pandemic, manufacturing disruptions related to COVID-19, and a growing demand from automakers for chips as cars rely on an increasing number of microprocessor units.

The biggest problem isn’t CPUs and GPUs, but far more mundane chips like display drivers and power management systems. These relatively low-tech chips are used in a large number of devices, including those made by Apple.

Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that supply shortages would cost Apple $6 billion in two quarters and warned the damage could be as high as $8 billion this quarter.

A recent report says that seven chip categories have experienced shortages and that four of them will continue to be affected into 2022 – exacerbated by shortages of chips to make new chip-making machines.

The impact on Mac delivery times

The Mac Studio and Studio Display were understandably hit hard, thanks to a combination of demand for the new devices and supply chain challenges. As a result, delivery times were reduced to two months within a few hours of the first pre-orders.

High-end MacBook Pro orders have also been hit by lockdowns in China, with some customers told they may have to wait up to five months for delivery. Riots at a MacBook Pro factory mean this situation could easily get worse.

New availability checks from Macworld reveal that only three Mac models are available for immediate shipping when purchased from Apple.
