It’s been a rough few days for fans of the CW’s original programming. Don’t just have fan favorites like Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman was abruptly canceled Earlier this week the network said goodbye to other series, including Naomi, enchanted, and Roswell, New Mexico. There will still be some original content for the 2022-23 season, including Gotham Knights and supernatural prequel series The Winchesters, But for a network that’s been running some of its series for quite a while, the culling was downright shocking. Added to this is the message from Warners and CBS Studios are currently trying to sell the networkand it’s safe to say that the network could look quite different after the 2022-23 season.
That Hollywood reporter published an investigative article on Friday detailing the CW’s recent eventsand it all boils down to money, basically. In 2011, current network owners Warners and CBS Studios partnered with Netflix to bring their series to the platform. (A season of The Lightning, would arrive on Netflix a week after the season finale aired.) International rights also contributed to the network’s rise in the 2010s by allowing them to air original series on Friday and Sunday nights, and contributed to the renewal of several shows over the course of the year at years. Ever wonder why Riverdale continues? That’s because it’s internationally considered a “Netflix Original” and treated like a relatively big deal on the platform.
But in 2019, Warners and CBS Studios, now overseen by Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global thanks to recent mergers, ended their deal with Netflix in favor of their respective streaming systems, HBO Max and Paramount+. As a result, Netflix revenue went away and its international reach slowly dwindled as the focus shifted to building these newer platforms. legends, along with other canceled shows like Fascinated and Roswell, were all included in that original Netflix deal. But now that the shows included in that deal are gone, nearly all of the CW series for the 2022-23 season will be available to stream on The CW’s website and its app, CW Seed, which is said to be of “special interest.” for those who want to buy the network.
Fans who’ve been spending their time navigating social media lately in hopes of their favorite show being renewed or picked up by HBO Max or Paramount+ may be out of luck. Further in the reporter’s article, they reveal that the streamers couldn’t snap a show like legends or which also cancelled Vampire Diaries spin off legacies because they got packed into this Netflix deal. While sign off legends and Batwoman have the chance to appear in the program that is still on the air Superman & Lois or The Lightning, that may be as far as they come. After all, and unless these fandoms can work their magic, these shows are dead and gone.
