Is it really happening this time?
In typical Apple stubbornness, the company has refused to transition the iPhone to a USB-C port over the years. The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro ranges, as well as the SE 2022, all come with the company’s Lightning port. Calls for Apple to switch its smartphones to USB-C have been loud and clear from users, online publications and even the European Union. A new rumor making the rounds says that the long-awaited move will finally happen in 2023 with the alleged launch of the iPhone 15. Adding fuel to the fire is a new report that Apple is actually testing this change internally.
Sources tell Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that Apple has been testing iPhone models that come with an internal USB-C charging port for at least the past few months. However, the iPhone 14 is scheduled to stick with the Lightning connector this year, so a change would not come until 2023 at the earliest.
This change would not only help the company comply with upcoming European regulations, but also bring the iPhone in line with Apple’s other hardware products — the iPad and Mac lines largely ditched Lightning ports years ago and now use USB. C instead. Additionally, while the Type-C connector is physically larger than Lightning, it would allow for faster charging and transfer speeds if Apple decides to add it to its phones.
Apple is also working on an adapter so new iPhone USB-C buyers can use their older Lightning accessories (although we’re pretty sure iPhone owners will have enough Android friends to borrow a cable or two). When that comes out, it will likely take a form similar to the famous Lightning to 3.5mm dongle that shipped when it first removed the headphone jack in the iPhone 7. Whether he will be included in the iPhone 15 boxes is another question and remains unanswered here.
Rumors of USB-C for the iPhone have been doing the rounds for years, and while it comes from a reporter with deep links to good information, this rumor may not affect whether next year’s iPhone will include the connector. However, should it actually happen, there will indeed be a new dawn in Apple’s Mac, iPad, accessories, and iPhone ecosystems.
