Mechanics in Ukraine are aiding the war effort by repairing Russian tanks so they can return to the battlefield – this time in support of Ukrainian forces.

A group of six mechanics worked at a warehouse in Kharkiv, a city in eastern Ukraine that has seen some of the worst bombing since Russia invaded on February 24, the New York Times reported on Friday.

The warehouse contained damaged Russian tanks, weapons and some Ukrainian vehicles, all of which were being repaired or refurbished for use by Ukrainian forces. The outlet reported that the work carried out included sifting through Russian equipment for information and recovering parts from broken or burnt-out tanks.

“This is where we bring the Russian tanks that we pulled out of the swamp, repair them and use them against the Russians,” a mechanic, who asked not to be named, told the Times.

Ukraine said on Saturday Russian troops were withdrawing from Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, after weeks of shelling. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said the country was preparing for a new, long-term phase of the war.

Reports of civilians helping with the war effort began before the full-scale invasion was officially launched. As of January, civilian volunteers were already training for combat, while active-duty military personnel and reservists were teaching them skills such as: B. holding a weapon and executing combat tactics.
